Joe comes to the club with real coaching and playing experiences. Most coaches talk about having “played” volleyball in high school or for fun. Joe played and won volleyball titles in high school(Loyola High), club(Santa Monica Beach Club) and college(Loyola Marymount.) He went on to coach in high school in California, coach in college in California, coach club and high school in Oregon, coach high school in Vancouver, coach with aardwolf and coach beach volleyball athletes.
2016 is Joe’s 22nd year coaching volleyball. He started coaching club volleyball while he was still in college PLAYING volleyball. He was a staple for the LMU Summer Camp, spending his first summer coaching the camp as a volunteer so that young volleyball players could attend free of charge. Though admittedly not ranked very high, Joe is still in the national rankings as a beach volleyball player on the AVP Tour. Joe is a 22 year member of the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (The AVCA) and is a CAP Level II-R certified coach through USAV. Joe is one of only a few coaches in the United States who is certified and accredited as a high school volleyball coach by the NFHS. Joe has worked for USAVolleyball and the AVP Tour. He has organized the High Performance Camp and the Junior Olympics (now called the Junior National Championships.)
While in his first year coaching in Oregon with the Beaverton High School Beavers, Coach Boken head coached the team to win their first match in seven years. Read the article here. He moved on to Evergreen High School where he developed the program into a tournament-winning (Kelso Tournament, 2014) conference competitor. The Plainsmen won their first match in three years in Joe's first season. Joe has also brought famous volleyball players to meet his high school and club players. Misty May-Treanor in 2013 and Misty May-Treanor visiting Evergreen High School where Joe was coaching.
Instrumental in developing BOYS VOLLEYBALL in our region, we have Joe to thank, in part, for the inception and initiation of boys volleyball in the CEVA Region. Read an article here in the Oregonian about the program Joe started for boys. An article written by the US Olympic Committee via USAVolleyball can be found here detailing the approach Joe and the CEVA office took towards developing the boys game. This article about the Cowlitz Bulldogs of the ACES Volleyball Club also gives credit to Joe's involvement in the development of the sport in Washington. Boys' clubs in Polk County, Oregon were also involved with Joe to start the boys game in their area.
In 2016, the club enjoyed its first trip to the USAV National Championships under Joe's direction. Aardwolf 13-1 Pyroclastic went to Indianpolis, Indiana. The team was the first U13 team in the region to attend the USAV National Championships! Read an article here about the trip. Some video on Fox News. The Mayor of Vancouver (Tim Leavitt) gives a personal sendoff to the team to Nationals (may require Facebook account to connect.)
During the summer, Joe organizes Misty May-Treanor’s Dream in Gold Clinics which are held nationwide. Find out more at http://dreamingold.com. Here is an article including reference to Joe running Misty's Clinics in The Santa Maria Times in California. Joe has retired from high school coaching to focus on his family. His young son Zerek plays on the club's U10 boys' team. Teaching players how to play the game and working with coaches to develop their skills, Joe appreciates that we all come from different places to play the game of volleyball.
You can reach Joe by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone at 360-281-1221. As director of leaarning and coaaching, Joe oversees the coaches and ensures that they are developing in line with the players.
Joe's Niece, Megan Boken, an all-start stand out volleyball player in Chicago, IL who won state high school volleyball titles with her team and national championships with her club team, went on to play in college at St. Louis University. Unfortunately, on August 18, 2012, Megan was shot and killed for her cell phone in a tragic robbery while she was on her way to a volleyball match at St. Louis University. Megan's Dad (Joe's brother), Mom, sisters and brother worked to help pass California SB 962 "The Leno Bill" which requires all cell phones manufactured for sale to include an internal "kill switch." This bill effectively destroyed the black market for cell phone theft. You're a little bit safer with your cell phone today because of Megan's and her family's sacrifice. We look forward to your involvement with our club.
